I make sculptural objects that explore the nature of the constructed interior spaces I am familiar with. By building formal investigations involving tension, function, and space with a variety of materials, this body of work examines the practical, aesthetic, and engineered decisions that make our physical world a reality.

The spaces we occupy and the objects we are surrounded by are (I think) often and easily taken for granted, especially now - as our attention, so valuable in a screen-driven economy, is drawn elsewhere. As we are pulled deeper into virtual spaces and experiences at a cultural level, I aim to maintain and strengthen my connection to, and understanding of, my tangible surroundings.

By combining the visual and physical language of architecture and packaging design, I am seeking to identify and manipulate the common threads that connect these disciplines - threads dictated by the engineering necessities of delineating and enclosing space, spanning distances, and protecting things. This practice affords me a moment of contemplation wherein the intended functions of materials and processes are subverted to reveal the established hierarchies in our fabricated boundaries, those which typically escape notice or considerate thought.

In contrasting precious metals with non-precious or utilitarian materials like cardboard and cement, this work creates opportunities for allegorical references to relationships between and beyond tactile material. The acknowledgment of hierarchies involving materials and objects opens a space for the consideration of the hierarchies inherent in our social constructs at large. When repositioning these materials in conversation with each other, our expectations and biases are exposed by our reactions, and these formal choices become a vehicle for broader introspection and understanding of the spaces and objects we create and inhabit.
